CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The 2012 Spring Conference is being being planned
for Friday, May 18, 2012.
I am very pleased to announce our speaker and
program for the spring conference. Our
speaker is Kareen King from Kansas. Kareen is
a dynamic singer and songwriter. She has a gift of
taking moments of truth that she experiences and
weaves them into captivating stories and songs that
remind us to treat our residents with respect and
dignity. As with most of our conferences,
these educational topics can be adapted to many of
our clients who have a variety of needs. We look
forward to seeing you in May.
SPEAKER: Kareen
King, is a Registered Drama Therapist, Keynote
speaker, Singer/Songwriter, Puppeteer, and member
of the Kansas Arts Commission Arts on Tour

lives in long-term care, placing on center stage
the value of both human connection and personal

PROGRAM: 6.5 CEU
Session 1. Creating the Golden Experience- A
Workshop
The Golden Experience capitalizes on the
enrichment needs of human beings, those needs that
go beyond physiological and safety needs, sometimes
referred to as existence needs. It takes the
conventional and makes it extraordinary.
Kareen will demonstrate how she creates golden
experiences with and for her residents.
Participants will learn and process the three
components of The Golden Experience: looking
beneath the surface, looking toward your neighbor,
looking beyond what is basic.
Objectives:
1. Participants will be able
to recognize and address the significance of
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in a facility
setting.
2. Participants will be able to
apply principles and techniques of the Golden
Experience in activity/life enrichment life of
individuals.
3. Participants will be able to
empathize with the role of the individual by being
a recipient and participant in the Golden
Experience activity.
Session 2.
Enriching Communication through Music: Golden
Oldies and Beyond!
How is hope for working with individuals
afflicted with memory loss and confusion defined in
the context of music? Through story, song,
and personal testimonial, Kareen will reveal
insights she has gleaned about connecting with this
unique population.
Objectives:
1. Participants will increase
conversational skills through the use of familiar
songs.
2. The Participant will gain
practical tools for eliciting therapeutic movement
to music.
3. The Participant will develop
practical methods of crafting songs to empower
elders.
Session 3.
Finding Emilou: A Concert
Beyond the most unlikely landscape, there lies
an immeasurable treasure. Emilou, an 89
year-old women who was a Polio survivor and lived
with symptoms of dementia for many years, was
considered by some to be the stereotypical nursing
home shouter. In a unique case study format
using original song and narrative, Kareen King
illustrates several crucial person-centered care
lessons she has learned from someone who might
otherwise be deemed useless at first glance.
Person-centered care takes on new meaning as a
result of this personal account of Kareen's work
and friendship with Emilou. Participants go
away with greater propensity toward empathy and
creativity; geared to improve quality of life for
their clients and themselves.
Note: A puppetry
workshop will be presented in conjunction with this
session.
Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to apply
principles of Validation while communicating with
individuals who live with dementia.
2. Participants will be able to engage with
residents as human beings in an I-Thou
relationship.
3. Participants will be able to recognize and
address the significance of exceptions to the order
in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in care
facilities.
